You Try Somebody Else was written in 1931 by B.G. De Silva and Lew Brown, with lyrics by Ray Henderson. The trio of Tin-Pan Alley songwriters formed in 1925. The three were known for their feel-good hits, and they were breaking up around the time that they wrote You Try Somebody Else. The 1956 film The Best Things In Life Are Free is a story about the 1920's song writing group. The movie features a character by the name of Kitty Kane, which is thought to be Helen Kane. In 1932, You Try Somebody Else was featured in a "follow the bouncing ball" Screen Songs cartoon, with the song performed in live-action by Ethel Merman.
