STRIKE UP THE BAND (SCREEN SONGS) 1930
|
|
George and Ira Gershwin composed Strike Up The Band in 1927 for an unsuccessful satire of militaristic music. In 1930, Strike Up The Band was featured in a "follow the bouncing ball" Screen Songs cartoon. The song was also later used by Fleischer in 1936 as the theme music on the first two Popeye cartoons. Also in 1936, after moving from New York to Los Angeles, the Gershwins contributed the song to UCLA to use as a rally tune. That version, with the lyrics revised by Ira Gershwin, was renamed Strike Up The Band For UCLA.
