MY OLD KENTUCKY HOME (SONG CAR-TUNES) 1926
|
After reading Harriet Beecher Stowe's anti-slavery novel Uncle Tom's Cabin, Stephen Foster was compelled to compose the song My Kentucky Home to expose the hardships and struggles associated with slavery. The song was published in 1852, and it was a popular hit for over a decade, and throughout the entire Civil War. In 1926, My Old Kentucky Home was featured in a early sound-on-film cartoon from Max Fleischer's Song Car-Tunes series. The cartoon - which pre-dated Disney's Steamboat Willie by two years - is the very first time that a cartoon character spoke. In 1928 the state of Kentucky voted to make My Old Kentucky Home the official state song for Kentucky. It is also the official song for the Kentucky Derby.

MY KENTUCKY HOME
Oh! The sun shines bright on my old Kentucky home,
Tis' summer, the people are gay,
The corn-top's ripe and the meadow's in the bloom,
Whilst the birds make music all the day.
The young folks roll on the little cabin floor,
All merry, all happy, and bright.
By'n by hard times comes a knockin' at the door,
Then my old Kentucky home, good-night!
Chorus:
Weep no more my lady,
Oh! weep no more today,
We will sing one song for my Old Kentucky Home,
For the Old Kentucky Home far away.
