Songwriter Herman Hupfeld is best known for writing the lyrics and music to the song As Time Goes By, which was made famous in the 1942 film Casablanca. In 1932 he wrote Let's Put Out The Lights (And Go To Sleep), which was introduced that year in the Broadway revue George White's Music Hall Varieties. On that stage the song was performed by French singer and actress Lil Damita, with it's original lyrics - "Let's Put Out The Lights (And Go To Bed)." Rudy Vallee recorded the song in 1932 with the original lyrics, reaching #2 on the charts. However, in a typical example of 1930's censorship, NBC refused to allow Vallee to sing the line "and go to bed" on his popular "Fleischmann's Yeast Hour" radio show. Due to the double entendre, the lyrics were replaced with "and go to bed." The recording that followed stuck with the altered lyrics, thus changing the songs title. In 1934, the song appears in Fleischer Studio's Betty Boop short She Wronged Him Right, where it is sung by Bonnie Poe as Betty Boop. The year before this, in 1933, Fleischer used Hupfeld's song When Yuba Plays The Rhumba On The Tuba for an installment of the Screen Songs series.
