Put On Your Old Grey Bonnett was published and recorded for the first time in 1909. The song was written by Ragtime composer Percy Wenrich with lyricist Stanley Murphy. Wenrich had moved to New York Cityin 1907 to pursue a music career in Tin Pan Alley. Before moving to New York, Wenrich had been a successful ragtime composer in Missouri, and had attended music school in Chicago. Before arriving in New York, he had come to be known as "That Joplin Kid." Put On You Old Grey Bonnet became a major hit, selling 2 million copies and becoming a popular vaudeville standard. In 1929 the song was used for an installment of the Screen Songs series, and the song was used again by Fleischer in the 1935 Color Classics short Musical Memories.
