Singin' Sam
Singin' Sam was the stage name of popular old-time radio personality Harry Frankel. At the age of 20 he began his career in show business when he joined a minstrel show, and before long he was performing in vaudeville. In 1930, when he was 28, he started a radio show in Cincinnati, Ohio. In these early days of commercial radio, shows were heavily associated with their sponsors, and he thus adopted the catchy title Singin' Sam, The Lawnmower Man. The following year he moved to New York to accept an offer from Barbasol to do a show on WABC. He soon became nationally famous as Singin' Sam, The Barbasol Man. In these days before television, radio was the typical source of family entertainment. His down-home folksy manner of speaking made his shows very popular. His radio show was fifteen minutes long, and it featured four "old-time" songs, along with his commentary and personal product promotions. The show was known for playing songs that were "old" - meaning "old" in the 1930's. He swore that he would never introduce a new song on his show. After three years he quit the show because he hated living in New York and wanted to move. Frankel had many offers from around the country, but he returned to Cincinnati and stuck a deal with Barbasol to continue his show from there for 7 years. In the late 1930's Frankel syndicated a similar national program sponsored by Coca-Cola that was broadcast all over the country - Refreshment Time with Singin' Sam.
