The Sailor's Hornpipe is a traditional hornpipe melody that dates back to the late 1700's. The song is traditionally accompanied by a dance that imitates the life of a sailor. The dance is normally presented individually and without a partner, and often done as a group. It is thought that this song and dance debuted on the wet deck of a ship long, long ago. The traditional dance is done by Groucho Marx at the beginning of the Marx Brother's classic 1933 film Duck Soup. The song appears often in the beginning of Fleischer Popeye cartoons since 1933. The song has also been frequently used in other cartoons from Disney Studios, Looney Tunes, Merry Melodies and others.

THE SAILOR'S HORNPIPE
These lyrics first appeared in the 1951 Disney film Alice in Wonderland)
Oh a sailor's life is a life for me,
How I love to sail
On the bounding sea.
And I never never ever
Do a thing about the weather
For the weather never ever
Does a thing for me.
Oh a sailor's life is a life for me,
How I love to sail
On the bounding sea.
If you want to sail
A ship like mine
And be a sailor all the time
Then learn to do
The Sailor's Hornpipe
Just like me.
And I love the wind a'blowin'
as we leave the quay,
'Til we round the jetty and
We let the sail blow free.
'Cause I always had the notion
For a life upon the ocean
Dance the Hornpipe to the
Motion of the rolling sea.
