Gertrude Niesen was a popular singer and actress in the 1930's and 1940's. She started performing as a child in Vaudeville, and in 1932, when she was 21, she made her first recording. The following year her popularity soared when she introduced the song Smoke Gets In Your Eyes. The year after that, in 1934, she appeared in the Fleischer Screen Songs film Keeps Rainin' All The Time, also known as Stormy Weather. She was voted "The Greatest Torch Singer of 1935". In later years she appeared in numerous Broadway shows and films.
