Singer, composer and radio personality Frank Crumit has been called the first person to play the ukulele on Broadway. One of his most successful recordings was A Gay Caballero - it sold more then four million records. The song is briefly sung by Bimbo in the 1930 Talkartoon short The Grand Uproar. The following year, in 1931, the song was used by Warner Brothers in their first Merrie Melodie cartoon release - Lady, Play Your Mandolin. The song was also used in 1937 by Walt Disney in Donald Duck's first solo cartoon Don Donald.

A GAY CABALLERO
I am a gay caballero
I come from Rio de Janiero
I carry with me my weetrembeli
And both of my latrabaleros.
I met a gay young senorita
Who gave me a dose of clapita
Right on the end of my weetrembeli
And both of my latrabaleros
I went to a wise surgeano
He said, "I prescribe purgeano,"
He cut off the end of my weetrembeli
And both of my latrabaleros
And now I'm a sad caballero
Returning to Rio de Janiero
But not as you see with my weetrembeli
And both of my latrabaleros
At night as I lie on my pillow
Seeking to finger my willow
All I find there is a handful of hair
And one dried up latrabalero.
