In 1939, after Paramount dismantled Fleischer Studios, Betty Boop was off on her own. Everything she would produce after that would no longer be under the watchful eye of her papa - Max. The original animated starlet was created out of the inkwell of animator and inventor Max Fleischer. There are few characters that can compare with her adored and everlasting charm. Remarkably, Betty has retained her charisma, and remained relevant and a beloved icon for close to a century. In 1955, Paramount sold the original Betty Boop cartoons, and they were syndicated for television. In the 1960's, Betty's television exposure dwindled as color cartoons were introduced to the broadcast audience. Betty found a renewed interest in 1974 with the successful record album compilation The Betty Boop Scandal of 1974. Then, in 1976 the film Betty Boop for President was released to coincide with the 1976 presidential election. The film was a compilation of colorized clips of vintage cartoons - it was only released in a limited number of theaters. In the 1980's Betty appeared in 2 newly produced television specials, and in the 1990's when VHS and BETA were introduced, many of Betty's vintage films were revived in the home-video tape rage. After DVD's were introduced in 1997, Betty's vintage catalog expanded on home video , making most of her films available to fans across the globe. Since the 1990's there have been a few plans for the pop icon to appear on the big screen again, but they have all fallen apart. Meanwhile, she has become an inspirational icon, and she has made various cameo appearances, such as in 1988's Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and on Project Runway All Stars in 2018. And in more recent news, a Betty Boop broadway show that has been in the works for 20 years is due to be introduced on stage in 2023. The show will feature all-new music written by master composer David Foster - recipient of 18 Grammy Awards.
