Dixie was composed Daniel Decatur Emmett in 1859. The popular American standard is also known as Dixie Land and I Wish I Was In Dixie. When the song was composed it was not a folk song - it was actually written for blackfaced minstrels of the 1850's. Between 1861-1865 - durning the Civil War - the song was adopted by the Confederate States of America as their National Anthem. The song is said to have been the favorite song of Abraham Lincoln's, who had the song played at political rallies, and it was played to large crowd by a military band shortly after General Robert E. Lee surrendered - ending the Civil War. There was also an anti-Confederate version of the song called Union Dixie, where the North asserts victory and mocks the Confederacy. Today, Dixie is considered by many to be offensive because of it's sympathetic view of slavery and the American South. The song was recorded in 1901 by Billy Murray with his group American Quartet. In 1912, Murray again recorded a popular early recording of the song with Ada Jones. There had been several popular recordings of the song before Max Fleischer used it for a 1925 installment of his Song Car-Tunes series. Later, the animated short was remade in 1929 as an installment of Fleischer's Screen Songs series.

(I WISH I WAS IN) DIXIE
I wish I was in the land of cotton,
Old times dar am not forgotten,
Look away! Look away! Look away! Dixie Land.
In Dixie Land whar' I was born in,
Early on one frosty mornin',
Look away! Look away! Look away! Dixie Land.
CHORUS:
Den I wish I was in Dixie, Hoo-ray! Hoo-ray!
In Dixie land, I'll take my stand to live and die in Dixie;
Away, away, away down south in Dixie,
Away, away, away down south in Dixie.
Old Missus marry Will-de-weaber,
Willium was a gay deceaber;
Look away! Look away! Look away! Dixie Land.
But when he put his arm around 'er Smiled as fierce as a forty-pounder,
Look away! Look away! Look away! Dixie Land.
CHORUS:
Den I wish I was in Dixie, Hoo-ray! Hoo-ray!
In Dixie land, I'll take my stand to live and die in Dixie;
Away, away, away down south in Dixie,
Away, away, away down south in Dixie.
His face was sharp as a butcher's cleaver,
But dat did not seem to greab 'er;
Look away! Look away! Look away! Dixie Land.
Old Missus acted the foolish part,
And died for a man dat broke her heart,
Look away! Look away! Look away! Dixie Land.
CHORUS:
Den I wish I was in Dixie, Hoo-ray! Hoo-ray!
In Dixie land, I'll take my stand to live and die in Dixie;
Away, away, away down south in Dixie,
Away, away, away down south in Dixie.
Now here's a health to the next old Missus,
And all the gals dat want to kiss us;
Look away! Look away! Look away! Dixie Land.
But if you want to drive 'way sorrow
Come and hear dis song to-morrow,
Look away! Look away! Look away! Dixie Land.
CHORUS:
Den I wish I was in Dixie, Hoo-ray! Hoo-ray!
In Dixie land, I'll take my stand to live and die in Dixie
Away, away, away down south in Dixie,
Away, away, away down south in Dixie.
Dar's buckwheat cakes an' Injun batter,
Makes you fat or a little fatter;
Look away! Look away! Look away! Dixie Land.
Den hoe it down and scratch your grabble,
To Dixie's land I'm bound to trabble,
Look away! Look away! Look away! Dixie Land
CHORUS:
Den I wish I was in Dixie, Hoo-ray! Hoo-ray!
In Dixie land, I'll take my stand to live and die in Dixie;
Away, away, away down south in Dixie
Away, away, away down south in Dixie.
