When It's Sleepy Time Down South was written in 1930 by Clarence Muse, Leon Rene and Otis Rene. The song was introduced that year in the play Under A Virginia Moon. The show had a short run, but the following year the song appeared again in two films - Safe From Harm, where it was sung by Nina Mae McKinney, and Heaven On Earth, where it was performed by Muse himself. Louis Armstrong recorded it over 100 times - early on it became his signature song. When It's Sleepy Time Down South is a song about slavery and "The Great Migration" of blacks from the south to the north. After Louis Armstrong recorded the song his exposure and popularity soared, and at the same time he lost some of his black audience. In 1932 the song was featured in an installment of the Screen Songs series.

WHEN IT'S SLEEPY TIME DOWN SOUTH
Pale moon shining on the fields below
Folks are crooning songs soft and low
Needn't tell me so because I know
It's sleepy time down south
Soft winds blowing through the pinewood trees
Folks down there like a life of ease
When old mammy falls upon her knees
It's sleepy time down south
Steamboats on the river a coming or a going
Splashing the night away
Hear those banjos ringing, the people are singing
They dance til the break of day, hey
Dear old southland with his dreamy songs
Takes me back there where I belong
How I'd love to be in my mammy's arms
When it's sleepy time way down south
Dear old southland with his dreamy songs
Take me back there where I belong
How I'd love to be in my mammy's arms
When it's sleepy time down south
Sleepy time down south
Pale moon shining on the fields below
Folks are crooning songs soft and low
Needn't tell me so because I know
It's sleepy time down south
Soft winds blowing through the pinewood trees
Folks down there like a life of ease
When old mammy falls upon her knees
It's sleepy time down south

Hear those banjos ringing, the people are singing
