The Girl I Left Behind Me is an English folk song that dates back to the 1500's. The song has been known as a popular war tune for soldiers as they marched off to war. The popularity of the song has dated back to English and Irish troops in the 1700's. It is thought that the song may have been imported to America as early as the mid-1700's. Over the centuries there has been many variations to the lyrics and verses. The U.S. Army adopted the song from the British during the War Of 1812, and it was a popular marching song for U.S. Troops throughout the Civil War, World War II and beyond. It is commonly performed in the U.S. as a classic fife and drum tune. In one it's earliest appearances on the big screen, the song is briefly sung in the 1932 Screen Songs film School Days. The song is also used in Fleischer's 1936 two-reeler Popeye The Sailor Meets Sinbad The Sailor. Since then, the song has appeared in many other films and has been recorded countless times.

THE GIRL I LEFT BEHIND ME
I'm lonesome since I crossed the hill,
And o'er the moor and valley,
Such grievous thoughts my heart do fill,
Since parting with my Sally
I seek no more the fine or gay,
For each does but remind me
How swift the hours did pass away,
With the girl I left behind me.
O ne'er shall I forget the night,
The stars were bright above me
And gently lent their silvery light
When first she vowed to love me
But now I'm bound to Brighton camp
Kind heaven, then, pray guide me
And send me safely back again,
To the girl I left behind me.
I'm lonesome since I crossed the hill,
And o'er the moor and valley,
Such grievous thoughts my heart do fill,
Since parting with my Sally
I seek no more the fine or gay,
For each does but remind me
How swift the hours did pass away,
With the girl I left behind me.
O ne'er shall I forget the night,
The stars were bright above me
And gently lent their silvery light
When first she vowed to love me
But now I'm bound to Brighton camp
Kind heaven, then, pray guide me
And send me safely back again,
To the girl I left behind me.
