"Orchids For You" was a catch phrase popularized in 1932 by journalist and radio show personality Walter Winchell - the inventor of gossip column. In his column and on his radio broadcast he would bestow an "orchid for you" to those he liked, and he would offer a "scallion for you" to those who annoyed him. Amongst those awarded an orchid were President Roosevelt, crooners and influential Italian conductor Toscannani. Scallions went to executives, censors and child entertainers. In 1933 everyone knew what the phrase meant, and the phrase inspired a song by Harry Revel and lyricist Mack Gordon. The song quickly appeared in the 1933 Screen Songs short Sing, Babies, Sing, where it is performed by Rose Marie. Later, in 1935, the phase inspired the courtroom drama motion picture Orchids To You. In 2020 the long forgotten phrase was revived when, in response to the Coronavirus Pandemic, orchids were handed out to hospital workers as a sign of appreciation.
