MARGIE HINES SINGS - 1933

Margie Hines was the first of six women that Max Fleischer hired to give Betty Boop a voice. She also was the last to voice Betty, on the final cartoon of the series - Rhythm On The Reservation.
Hines made her big break in show business by winning a "Boop-Oop-A-Doop" contest held by Fleischer. In the early 1930's Hines provided voices for Van Buren Studio's cartoon series' Aesop's Fables and Tom and Jerry. Hines first voiced Betty Boop from 1930-1932, and she was brought back from 1938-1939 to do the last episodes of the series. She is also widely known as the voice of Olive Oyl from 1939-1944 in Fleischer's Popeye The Sailor series. In addition, Hines also did voices in other Fleischer films, such as in Gulliver's Travels and Mr Bug Goes To Town, and she also appeared in Fleischer's short-lived Stone-Age series. In 1938, Hines first met her co-star in the Popeye series - Jack Mercer, the voice of Popeye. By the end of the year the two were married. The real-life wedding of Popeye to Olive Oyl created quite the buzz at the time. |
