EDDIE CANTOR - PHONOFILM SOUND-ON-FILM DEMO - 1923
Eddie Cantor was born in New York City in 1892, and he first appeared on stage when he was in his early teens. His first paying job was a waiter and performer at a Coney Island saloon - he performed there alongside a young Jimmy Durante on piano. In 1917 he was signed to perform with the Ziegfeld Follies. The ten years that he starred on that stage are considered to be the best years of that lavish, elaborate and legendary Broadway production. Throughout the 1920's, Cantor starred in several films including Kid Boots and Whoopie!. In 1927 Cantor was offered the lead role in The Jazz Singer. After turning the role down, the role went to Al Jolson - who, like Cantor, was known for his "black-face" performances.
Cantor's big eyes and his eye-rolling antics earned him the nickname "Banjo Eyes". In cartoons and illustrations his big eyes were often exaggerated. In 1931 and 1932, Eddie Cantor was featured in the Screen Songs shorts for By The Light Of The Silvery Moon, My Baby Just Cares For Me and Show Me The Way To Go Home. And, in 1938 he appeared in Beside A Moonlit Stream - the final cartoon in Fleischer's Screen Songs series. Cantor also appeared in caricature in many Looney Tunes cartoons, as well as making appearances in cartoons from Walt Disney and Merrie Melodies. In more recent years Cantor is well-known from being portrayed as a recurring character on the HBO TV series Boardwalk Empire.
In addition to his singing and acting credits, Cantor co-wrote Merrily We Roll Along in 1935 - the theme song for Warner Brother's Merry Melodies cartoon series. |
