Sammy Timberg was one of the most important composers in the history of animation. As resident composer at Fleischer Studios, he was responsible for writing dozens of the films memorable original songs. In his first Fleischer Studio's undertaking in 1931 he co-wrote the script and music for Musical Justice - a live-action short film featuring Rudy Vallee and Mae Questel as Betty Boop. The film introduced Betty's signature song Don't Take My Boop-Oop-A-Doop Away, written by Timberg and lyricist Samuel Lerner. Also, in 1932, Timberg composed Sweet Betty - it would become the Betty Boop theme song. Timberg, working alongside Lou Fleischer as musical director, and he scored and/or directed music for around 200 Fleischer films. Timberg continued to work with the studio after the Paramount takeover that ousted the Fleischer brothers and changed the name to Famous Studios.
Timberg's brother was vaudeville comedian, actor and songwriter Herman Timberg, and he was the uncle of Fleischer Studio's head animator Seymour Kneitel - Max Fleischer's son-in-law. |
