DON REDMAN - HOW'M I DOIN'
I HEARD (BETTY BOOP) 1932 Jazz musician and bandleader Don Redman joined his first band when he was 6 years old. He grew up in West Virginia, where his mother was a singer and his father was a bandleader. He studied music in Storer College in Harper's Ferry, WV and at the Boston Conservatory before ending up in New York City. In 1923, 23 year old Redman joined the horn section of the influential Fletcher Henderson Orchestra. He was soon writing innovative arrangements - his innovative sound laid the foundation of Big Band Swing. In 1931, Redman formed his own band and famously took on a residency at Manhattan's ritzy jazz club Connie's Inn. The following year, in 1932, Redman made his first film appearance - featured, in live -action, in the Betty Boop cartoon I Heard.
