POLLY WOLLY DOODLE (sung with different lyrics)
HOT DOG (TALKARTOONS) 1930 Polly Wolly Doodle is know today as a traditional American children's song. The song is often credited to Dan Emmett - it was introduced in 1842 at his Virginia Minstrel show, which was performing at New York's Bowery Amphitheatre. The song was first published in 1880 in the Harvard student songbook - it had been performed two years before that by the Yale Glee Club. The song's regrettable lyrics have been reworked numerous times, and the original lyrics are hardly acknowledged today. Polly Wolly Doodle made it's first appearance on the big screen in the 1930 Talkartoon short Hot Dog, where it is sung with altered lyrics. The cartoon was the first release in the Talkartoons series, and it featured the first appearance of Bimbo - who was unnamed at the time. It was also the first Fleischer film to be scored by Lou Fleischer. In 1935, Polly Wolly Doodle was further popularized by Shirley Temple, who performed it in the film The Littlest Rebel. A few years later the song was used as the theme of the 1938 Donald Duck short Good Scouts. The song continues to appear in all forms of media, and it's melody has been used to create numerous other songs.
