The phrase "Hi-Di-Ho" comes from legendary band leader Cab Calloway's signature 1931 song Minnie The Moocher. The catchy ad-libbed scat line earned Calloway the nickname "The Hi-Di-Ho man. The popular phrase also inspired the 1932 song You Gotta Hi-Di-Ho (To Get Along With Me). That song was first released as the b-side to Reefer Man. What made "Hi-Di-Ho" so special and memorable was Calloway's performing the phrase as a call-and-response scat battle. The call-and-response would progress into a humorously complex skat variation that would often leave the audience trying to keep up until they would relinquish in a fit of laughter. You Gotta Hi-Di-Ho is one of four Cab Calloway numbers from the 1933 Betty Boop short The Old Man Of The Mountain, where Calloway performs the song with Betty Boop. In 1982, funk band Kool and the Gang released their song Hi-Di-Hi, Ho-Di-Ho on their fourteenth album As One. The song was a tribute to and take off on Calloway and his music, particularly You Gotta Hi-Di-Ho (To Get Along With Me) and Minnie The Moocher.
