Ethel Merman was born in Queens, New York in 1908. By the late 1920's, Merman was performing at nightclubs and private parties. Merman received a first break into film when she was hired to replace Ruth Etting in the 1930 Paramount film Follow The Leader. In 1932, Max Fleischer brought Merman back to the screen alongside Betty Boop in 3 different Screen Songs films: Let Me Call You Sweetheart, You Try Somebody Else and Time On My Hands. In 1933, Merman was featured in the Screen Songs film Song Shopping. Between 1930-1933, Merman also had been contracted to perform in 10 short musical films for Paramount, and she performed in various hit musicals. After 1934, Merman began to appear in the first of numerous hollywood musicals, and later Broadway shows where she has introduced standards such as I Got Rhythm, I Get A Kick Out Of You, There's No Business Like Show Business, and many others. She has been called "the undisputed first lady of the musical comedy stage".
