Mae Questel was born in the Bronx in New York City in 1908. When she was in high school, she also attended a school at the Theatre Guild. Intent on being an entertainer, 17-year old Questel won a Helen Kane imitiating contest. This lead to Kane getting signed to do a show on vaudeville, where she was billed as "Personality Singer Of Personality Songs". In her act she would imitate many different popular singers, including Mae West, Marlene Dietrich, Fanny Brice, Eddie Cantor, Helen Kane and many others. Her show, which also included animal imitations, was seen by Max Fleischer in 1931. Questel was hired by Fleischer to voice Betty Boop for his cartoon series, beginning with 1931's Silly Scandals - the sixth Betty Boop cartoon. Questel voiced Betty in over 150 cartoons - far more then any of the other four that voiced Betty Boop. In 1933, Questel began to voice both Olive Oyl and Sweet Pea in Fleischer's Popeye The Sailor series. Questel also voiced many other characters, including Lil' Audrey and Casper The Friendly Ghost - she even voiced Popeye in some cartoons.
