Composer and lyricist Burton Lane is said to have discovered Judy Garland when she was 13 years old. In the 1930's, Lane had a successful career as a songwriter for stage and film productions. He composed the music How'dja Like To Love Me for the 1938 all-star comedy musical College Swing - it was performed in the film by Martha Raye and Bob Hope. That year the song also appeared in the Popeye short Plumbing Is A "Pipe", where it is performed by Margie Hines as Olive Oyl. The song's lyrics were written by Frank Loesser, who wrote lyrics for many composers in the 1930's. He would later be considered one of the greatest lyricists of stage and film - he wrote many standards and he was nominated for five "Best Song" Academy Awards. He won the award only once, in 1949, for Baby, It's Cold Outside.

HOW'DJA LIKE TO LOVE ME
You're just a fake romancer
You're just a fly-by-night
But I'm a take-a-chancer
So, come on and hold me tight
You got the same old answer
From every girl you've met
So here is one I bet you haven't answered yet
How'dja like to love me, how'dja like it
How'dja like to kiss me, how'dja like it
Could you kinda care, could you learn to part your hair my way
How'dja like to love me, on the level
How'dja like to miss me, like the devil
Would you be so kind as to keep me on your mind all day
I told my doctor, my lawyer to see what they think
The moment they saw you, were they tickled pink
So, how'dja like to love me, and no other
How'dja like to drop in, meet my Mother
How'dja like a toothbrush a-hangin' right alongside mine
How'dja like it, as for me I'd like it fine
