Comedian and singer Fanny Brice famously headlined the Ziegfeld Follies in 1910 and 1911. She returned to the Follies from 1921 into the thirties. She was one of a few performers to portray themselves in the films The Great Ziegfeld (1936) and Ziegfeld Follies (1946). The 1964 Broadway musical Funny Girl - and the Oscar winning film that followed - was the story of her rise to fame. In Betty Boop's 1932 film Stopping The Show, Betty imitates Brice performing I'm An Indian. The scene is replayed two years later in Betty Boop's Rise To Fame. I'm An Indian was one of the early hits she introduced on the Ziegfeld stage. Her 1921 recording of the song was the #37 song in Brasil in 1924. Brice performed the song in the 1928 film My Man, and also in Ziegfeld Follies. The Yiddish Indian characterization in the song, which was written by Tin Pan Alley songwriter Blanche Merrill, contributed to the Jewish Indian stereotype that was commonly seen in the 1920's and 1930's. Merrill wrote a vast amount of songs, and was most well-know for the songs she wrote for Fanny Brice.

I'M AN INDIAN
Look at me,
Oh, look at me.
Oho, I'm an Indian,
Aha, I'm an Indian.
Down in the feet is the moccasin for the shoes.
Up in the back is a little papoose,
Up in the head is a feather from a goose.
It's a goose,
It's a goose,
But...I'm an Indian...
Oy-Oy-Oy-Oy,
I'm an Indian squaw!
Look at me,
Oh, look at me.
Oho, I'm an Indian,
Aha, I'm an Indian.
Down in the feet is the moccasin for the shoes.
Up in the back is a little papoose,
Up in the head is a feather from a goose.
It's a goose,
It's a goose,
But...I'm an Indian...
Oy-Oy-Oy-Oy,
I'm an Indian squaw!
