WHISPERS IN THE DARK - SCREEN SONGS - 1937
In 1937, the Jack Benny musical comedy Artist and Models received an Oscar nomination for Best Song for the featured song - Whispers In The Dark. The song was performed in the movie by Connee Boswell, from the popular and influential group The Boswell Sisters. After her sisters retired in 1936, Connee had a very successful solo career. She has been considered to be one of the greatest jazz vocalists of all-time. Connee often sang seated or in a wheelchair due to a childhood bout with polio, and she was very active as an advocate for people with disabilities encouraging awareness and support. Also in 1937, the popular Whispers In The Dark was featured as a release in the Screen Songs series, performed by Gus Arnheim and his band, with vocals by June Robbins.

WHISPERS IN THE DARK
Whispers in the dark
Two shadows in the night
So gentle and so tender that every little word
Is like a song of sweet delight
Whispers in the dark
How heavenly they seem
When lips and arms surrender and ev'ry little kiss
Is like a dream within a dream
But soon the breezes whisper to the trees
That dawn is near
So soon their little paradise of love will disappear
Whispers in the dark
While stars are in the blue
Upon a night like this perhaps I'll hear
A little whisper in the dark from you
Whispers in the dark
Two shadows in the night
So gentle and so tender that every little word
Is like a song of sweet delight
Whispers in the dark
How heavenly they seem
When lips and arms surrender and ev'ry little kiss
Is like a dream within a dream
But soon the breezes whisper to the trees
That dawn is near
So soon their little paradise of love will disappear
Whispers in the dark
While stars are in the blue
Upon a night like this perhaps I'll hear
A little whisper in the dark from you
