MARGIE (SONG CAR-TUNES) 1926

The popular 1920 jazz standard Margie, also known as My Little Margie, was composed by vaudeville pianist Con Conner with pianist J. Russel Robinson - a member of the Original Dixieland Band. The song's lyrics were written by vaudeville performer Benny Davis. This was the first big hit from Davis, who also penned the 1926 hit Baby Face, and was later inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Margie was named after singer Eddie Cantor's 5-year-old daughter Margie. Cantor's version of the song was a number one hit in 1921, establishing the songs broad popularity. Several other versions of the song also charted in the early 1920's. In 1926, the song was used for an installment of Fleischer's Song Car-Tunes series.

MARGIE
You may talk about your love affairs,
Here's one I'd like to tell to you,
All night long they sit upon the stairs,
He holds her close and starts to coo:
My little Margie, I'm always thinking
of you. Margie, I'll tell the world I
love you. Don't forget your promise
to me. I have bought a home and ring
and everything for Margie--you've
been my inspiration. Days are never
blue. After all is said and done, there
is really only one--oh, Margie, Margie,
it's you!

He holds her close and starts to coo:
