Bandleader and musician Don Redman joined his first band when he was six years old. In 1931, a thirty-one year old Redman formed his own band, quickly earning a residency at the famous Connie's Inn jazz club in Harlem.
Released September 20, 1935. Features Abe Lyman and his Orchestra. This video supplements the dissertation "Organist-Led Community Singing in the American Picture Palace, 1925-1933." - Dorothy Parker, member of the Algonquin Round Table, and best known for her light verse, stories and wisecracks, wrote this standard's lyrics. Victor Records 25104-A - Ray Noble Orchestra, Al Bowlly on Vocals - I Wished On The Moon 1935. "I Wished on the Moon" is a song composed by Ralph Rainger, with lyrics by Dorothy Parker. It was first recorded in 1935 by Ruth Etting. Bing Crosby sang the song in The Big Broadcast of 1936. I wished on the Moon --Billie Holiday 1935 20 year old Billie Holiday sings in a first session with the Teddy Wilson Orchestra on July 2 1935 in New York. Next to Teddy on piano the All Star Band consists of Benny Goodman clarinet, Roy Eldridge trumpet, Ben Webster tenor sax, John Truehart guitar, John Kirby bass and Cozy Cole drums. Jazz promotor John Hammond heard Billie for the first time in New York's Monette club in 1933 and wrote in Melody Maker: "Billie although only 18, she weighs over 200 lbs, is incredibly beautiful, and sings as well as anybody I ever heard". Hammond told Benny Goodman, and the two went to this Monette club. Both were impressed and it was the start of Billie's career These lyrics were composed by none other than iconic author/poet/critic/screenwriter Dorothy Parker, with music by Ralph Rainger. Bing sang this “Hit Parade” tune on-screen in “The Big Broadcast Of 1936” (released 9/35). Little Jack Little’s recording of the song is also posted to the MusicProf78 channel. I WISHED ON THE MOON by Teddy Wilson with Billie Holiday, recorded in 1935. This is from Billie Holiday's very first recording session with Brunswick! Cool! It is interesting that she teamed with Benny Goodman in 1933 for her very first recording session ever, and here 2 years later, Benny Goodman is playing clarinet for Teddy Wilson at her 2nd recording session ever. |

HOW'M I DOIN'?
Now I know a gal' named Sadie Green,
The hottest gal' in New Orleans,
She loves to dance, she loves to sing,
Say she take a chance on any ole' thing.
The other night down at the hall,
When the band would play,
Miss Sadie'd go on that floor,
And this is what she'd say,
Now how'm I doin' (hey hey)
Twee twee twee, twah twah,
Now how'm I doin' (hey hey)
Aww, gee, oh baby, you're sure.
Now I'm not braggin' but it's understood,
That everything I do I sure do good.
How'm I doin' (hey hey)
Twee twee twee, twah twah,
How'm I doin' (hey hey)
Oh twee twee twee, twah twah,
Now how'm I doin' (hey hey)
Oh gee, baby, you're sure.
I only meant to do a little bit,
You done made me like it and I just can't quit.
Now how'm I doin' (hey hey)
Oh twee twee twee, twah twah,
Mmmm... how'm I doin' (hey hey)
Twee twee nyah nyah nyah,
Now how'm I doin' (hey hey)
Aww, gee, baby, you're sure.
I'll admit I'm not the best in town,
But I'll be the best till the best come round.
Now how'm I doin', boys? (hey hey)
Twee twee nyah nyah nyah,
How we doin'? (hey hey)
Twee twee twee, twah twah,
Now how we doin'? (hey hey)
Oh gee, oh baby, you're sure.
How we doin'? (hey hey)
Twee twee twee, twah twah,
How we doin'?
Twee twee twee twee, twah twah,
How we doin'?
