When Yuba Plays The Rhumba On The Tuba was composed by Herman Hupfeld. Hupfeld wrote songs for many musicals, and he performed his own music in Ziegfeld's Midnight Frolic in 1912. His best-known song is As Time Goes By, which was famously featured in the film Casablanca - Hupfeld wrote the lyrics and composed music. When Yuba Plays The Rhumba On The Tuba was written for the 1933 Broadway musical The Third Little Show, and the song was introduced there by Walter O'Keefe. Also in 1933, the song was featured in a Max Fleischer Screen Songs cartoon performed - in live-action - by The Mills Brothers.

WHEN YUBA PLAYS THE RHUMBA ON HIS TUBA
His name was Yuba!
He was homely, he was dumb.
And so was Yuba
Just a big ambitious bum.
He wouldn't do-a
So much as chew a piece of gum.
So this is news to me.
I understand-a
He's an overnight success,
He's in demand-a;
Why, I never could have guessed.
Well, he found a big bass tuba,
Then he bummed his way to Cuba,
And the rest is history.
REFRAIN
Down in Havana there's a funny-lookin' booba;
He plays the rumba on the tuba, down in Cuba.
Oh, any sap'll sell an apple,
But this chap would rather grapple
With his umpa, umpa, umpa —
They prefer it to a boop-a, doop-a, doop-a.
They love the rumba on the tuba down in Cuba.
It doesn't take him very long to get a tumble,
For all the rumba lovers go into their rumble.
Oh, how I'd like to be his double
For, without a bit of trouble,
With his umpa, umpa, umpa
He can knock eleven ladies for a loop-a.
They love the rumba on the tuba down in Cuba.
He's not a greenhorn,
He blows a mean horn,
A must-be-seen horn.
Oh, he's a whiz!
Why, all Havana loves this funny-lookin' boob-a
Who plays the rumba on the tuba, down in Cuba.
1. I can't believe it, but they tell us
Ev'ry peanut vendor's jealous
Of his umpa, umpa, umpa,
They prefer it to the boop-a, doop-a, doop-a.
They love the rumba on the tuba down in Cuba.
They love his umpa, umpa, umpa, umpa, ump!
Down in Ha-ump! ump! ump!
REPEAT REFRAIN
2. He's getting wealthy, strong, and hardy
Thanks to plenty good Bacardi,
And his umpa, umpa, umpa.
Oh, he knocked the boop-a, doop-a for a loop-a.
They love the rumba on the tuba down in Cuba.
They love his umpa, umpa, umpa, umpa, ump!
Down in Ha-ump! ump! ump!
