JUST A GIGOLO - 1932
In 1932, stage actress Irene Bordoni starred in the Max Fleischer Follow The Bouncing Ball Screen Songs short Just A Gigolo. Before 22-year old Bordoni arrived in the United States in 1907, she was well-known in France on the stage and in a few silent films. In 1920, Bordoni made her Broadway debut in the Shubert Brothers production Broadway To Paris. Through the 1920's Bordoni starred in several successful stage shows, including French Doll, Little Miss Bluebird and Naughty Cinderella. She is well-known for introducing George Gershwin's popular song Do It Again in the 1922 Broadway show The French Doll. And although the song has had many notable releases, Bordoni never released the song herself.
Irene Bordoni is most famous for her starring role in the 1928 Cole Porter musical Paris, where she introduced the song Let's Do It (Let's Fall In Love) - Cole Porter's first big hit. Bordoni was also well-known for her stylish clothes. She often performed in outfits designed by famous artist and designer Erte. Because of her immense popularity, her appearance in Lucky Strike Ads is said to have contributed to a boom in smoking among women.
