Songwriter and record executive Bud DeSylvia was the son Portuguese-American silent film actor Hal De Forrest. He found immediate fame after writing songs for Al Jolsen's 1918 Broadway production of Sinbad. Soon after that he moved from California to New York to pursue songwriting in Tin Pan Alley. In the early 1920's he worked with Al Jolson and George Gershwin before teaming up with Lew Brown and Ray Henderson - the three became one of the most successful Tin Pan Alley songwriters of the time. After moving back to California to produce stage and screen musical he teamed up singer/songwriter Johnny Mercer and record store owner Glenn Wallichs. In 1942 the three started the record label Capital Records. In 1923, DeSylvis wrote the novelty classic tune Minnie The Mermaid. The song was recorded several times in the 1920's before appearing on the big screen in the 1930 Talkertoon short film Barnacle Bill. The song is briefly sung by the mermaids - performed by Billy Murray and Margie Hines.

MINNIE THE MERMAID
The other night I dreamed that I was
Down at the bottom of the sea.
I met a Mermaid fair, Who had a cottage there,
Her name was Minnie and she tumbled for me.
She had the tail of a fish for a train,
But just the same, she could sure entertain.
Oh what a time I had with Minnie the Mermaid,
Down at the bottom of the sea;
I forgot my troubles, There among the bubbles,
Gee but she was awfully good to me.
And every night when the star fish came out,
I'd hug and kiss her so.
Oh what a time I had with Minnie the mermaid,
Down in her seaweed bungalow.
The other night I dreamed that I was
Down at the bottom of the sea.
I met a Mermaid fair, Who had a cottage there,
Her name was Minnie and she tumbled for me.
She had the tail of a fish for a train,
But just the same, she could sure entertain.
Oh what a time I had with Minnie the Mermaid,
Down at the bottom of the sea;
I forgot my troubles, There among the bubbles,
Gee but she was awfully good to me.
And every night when the star fish came out,
I'd hug and kiss her so.
Oh what a time I had with Minnie the mermaid,
Down in her seaweed bungalow.
