BILLY MURRAY - I'M AFRAID TO GO HOME IN THE DARK
I'M AFRAID TO GO HOME IN THE DARK (SCREEN SONGS) 1929 |
|
Hugely popular singer Billy Murray was born in Philadelphia in 1877. Murray was fascinated in theatre, and in 1893 he joined a traveling vaudeville trope. In 1897, in the early days of cylinder recording, he made his first recordings. By 1903, Murray was well-known, and recording extensively in New York and in New Jersey. In the early 1900's, Murray was one of the most popular singers, recording romantic ballads and novelty songs. He recorded hundreds of songs. By the 1920's, the electric microphone brought in new musical styles like crooning, and Murrays popularity began to fade. In the late 1920's, Max Fleischer hired Murray to sing and provide voices in several of his Screen Songs cartoons. These cartoons would typically feature Murray, sometimes performing with a group, and accompanied by Fleischer's signature "Bouncing Ball". In 1929, Murray did voicing for the Fleischer film Finding His Voice. Murray also would sometimes do the voice of Betty Boop's dog friend Bimbo, as well as some of the other animated characters.
