Let Me Call You Sweetheart became a huge hit for The Peerless Quartet when they released the first recording of the popular song in 1910. That original recording of the song was selected for historic preservation by the National Recording Registery in 2016. The song, written by Leo Friedman and Beth Slater Whitson, quickly became a standard and was recorded countless times over the past century. Friedman and Whitson also wrote Meet Me Tonight In Dreamland in 1909. These two songs are amongst the top selling songs in sheet music - an industry that dominated the music business of the time. Let Me Call You Sweetheart had it's very first appearance on the big screen in 1932 in the self titled installment of Max Fleischer's Screen Songs series. In the film, a 22-year old Ethal Merman performs while the bouncing ball leads the audience in a sing-a-long.
joined his first band when he was six years old. In 1931, a thirty-one year old Redman formed his own band, quickly earning a residency at the famous Connie's Inn jazz club in Harlem. Charted at #1 in November 1911. Written by Leo Friedman and Beth Slater Whitson. This song quickly became a standard and has been recorded by hundreds of artists. 22 year old Ethel Merman sings Let me call you Sweetheart. The clip is from a Max Fleischer UM&M soundie produced in 1930. These short movies were shown before the main feature in most movie theaters and I remember hearing people singling songs, directed by the bouncing ball, as late as the 1950s in Texas. |

Keep the love light glowing
In your eyes so true
Let me call you sweetheart
