In 1911, young Tin Pan Alley songwriter Irving Berlin recorded his classic dance standard Everybody's Doin' It Now. He wrote the song in to capitalize on the booming dance craze in early 20th Century America. Berlin had intentionally kept the title of the song non-specific to "what" everybody was doing. By doing this the song would be relevant for whichever animal dance was the new fad - The Turkey Trot, The Grizzley Bear, The Bunny Hug and so on. These ragtime dance crazes caused quite a stir - men and women were dancing closer than ever before, literally "hugging" by the waist. In some cases, theatre owners and dancers were arrested for performing "wicked and scandalous" obscenity. Everybody's Doin' It Now was originally recorded by Collins & Harian. The same year that Everybody's Doin' It Now was released, Berlin became an instant celebrity with the release of his first major hit song - Alexander's Ragtime Band.
