In the early 20th century Billy Murray was a one of the most popular entertainers in America. He also was heavily involved In the early sound cartoons from Fleischer Studios, providing the voice of Bimbo and others and contributing music to the film's soundtracks. In the 1931 Talkartoon short Teacher's Pest, Murry (as Bimbo) sings the popular World War 1-era novelty song K-K-K-Katy. Murray had made the original recording of the song in 1918 - at the time it was billed as "The Sensational New Stammering Song Success Sung by the Soldiers and Sailors." The song was written by Canadian-American composer Geoffrey O'Hara. In the early 1900's O'Hara moved to America and found work as a Vaudeville performer, during World War I he was a singing instructor for American troops, teaching them patriotic songs. He composed over 500 songs, including many patriotic songs and hymns. Also, during World War 1, President Woodrow Wilson commissioned O'Hara to create a new version of The Star Spangled Banner in an effort to popularize the song and it's status. In 1916, President Wilson proclaimed the song as the National Anthem of the Armed Forces, and in 1918 O'Hara's revised version of the song was played at the World Series to honor the brave men fighting in the war. The game had almost been cancelled due to the war. This moment boosted the song's popularity and started the tradition of playing the song at sports events. It wasn't until 1931 that an act of congress made the song a National Anthem, and the O'Hara revised version is what we still sing today.

K-K-K-KATY
Jimmy was a soldier brave and bold,
Katy was a maid with hair of gold,
Like an act of fate,
Kate was standing at the gate,
Watching all the boys on dress parade.
Kate smiled, with a twinkle in her eye,
Jim said m-m-meet you by and by.
That same night at eight,
Jim was at the garden gate,
Stuttering this song to K-K-Kate...
K-K-K-Katy, beautiful Katy,
You're the only g-g-g-girl that I adore;
When the m-m-m-moon shines,
Over the cowshed,
I'll be waiting at the k-k-k-kitchen door.
K-K-K-Katy, beautiful Katy,
You're the only g-g-g-girl that I adore;
When the m-m-m-m-moon shines,
Over the cowshed,
I'll be waiting at the k-k-k-kitchen door.
No one ever looked so nice and neat,
No one could be just as cute and sweet,
That's what Jimmy thought,
When the wedding ring he bought,
Now he's off to France the foe to meet.
Jimmy thought he'd like to take a chance,
See if he could make the Kaiser dance,
Stepping to a tune,
All about the silv'ry moon,
This is what they hear in far off France...
K-K-K-Katy, beautiful Katy,
You're the only g-g-g-girl that I adore;
When the m-m-m-moon shines,
Over the cowshed,
I'll be waiting at the k-k-k-kitchen door.
